HDB Windows IN SINGAPORE
Overview

Types of HDB Windows

Most HDB flats use one of four window types, and many homes mix them to suit each room:

  •       Casement — hinged at the side and swings outward. The most common HDB window: it opens fully for maximum ventilation and is easy to clean from inside.
  •       Sliding — panels slide horizontally on a track. Space-saving where an outward swing isn’t possible, so it’s ideal for balconies, service yards and corridor-facing openings.
  •       Top-hung (awning) — hinged at the top and tilts outward. Lets you keep the window open during light rain while staying ventilated and secure.
  •       Fixed / picture — a sealed pane that doesn’t open, used to maximise light and view or to fill in around other window types. It has the slimmest frame of all.

Older flats may also have louvre (ventilation) windows. One important limit: HDB does not allow the replacement of full-height windows, including 3/4-height and bay windows, so those stay as built even during a renovation.

HDB Aluminium Windows: Why Aluminium Wins

Aluminium is the most practical window material for Singapore homes because it doesn’t rust, rot or warp in the heat and humidity, and its strength allows slim frames that let in more light.  9 Power fabricates in architectural-grade 6063-T5 aluminium alloy, with powder-coated finishes that resist fading and never need repainting. Compared with uPVC or timber, aluminium gives you a larger glass area, a cleaner look and genuinely low maintenance — usually just a wipe-down.

Can You Change Your HDB Windows?

Yes — but you must hire a BCA-approved window contractor to replace the window in an HDB, and get a renovation permit.  This isn’t optional. Windows in a high-rise flat are a safety-critical element, so HDB and BCA require certified installers, mandatory grade 304 stainless-steel rivets, and a completion certificate submitted to BCA after the work.

In practice, that means you can replace standard casement and sliding windows, but not full-height, 3/4-height or bay windows. As an HDB-licensed contractor, 9 Power assesses your existing windows, submits the permit, installs to the required standard, and safely removes and disposes of your old units. HDB’s window works guidelines set out exactly what’s allowed.

More Light, Slim Frames

Aluminium's strength allows thinner profiles than uPVC, so you get larger glass area, brighter rooms and a cleaner look.

Quieter Indoors

Laminated or double-glazed options cut traffic and neighbour noise — a real difference for flats facing busy roads.

Low Maintenance

A wipe-down is all it takes. Powder-coated finishes resist fading, and there's no repainting or rust-treating to keep up with.

Design and Configuration

HDB Windows Design: Finishes, Glass and Configuration

A window replacement is also a chance to update the look of your flat. With 9 Power you choose:

  •       Frame finish — powder-coated silver, white or black as standard, with wood-grain and custom RAL colours on request.
  •       Glass — clear, tinted, frosted, laminated, or double-glazed (insulated) for quieter rooms.
  •       Configuration — slim casement, sliding or top-hung profiles, mixed to suit each room, with the option to integrate grilles or insect screens.

For flats facing busy roads, laminated or double-glazed soundproof windows make a real difference to noise. Slim aluminium frames keep the glass area — and the view — as large as possible.

Solar Film for HDB Windows

You can add solar or tinted film to your existing HDB window glass to cut heat, glare and UV — and it generally needs no permit, provided the film is non-reflective or does not exceed 20% reflectance under HDB’s conditions.  Highly reflective or mirror-like films can affect the building’s external appearance, so check them against the latest HDB guidance before installing.

Film is applied to the glass you already have, which makes it a quick, lower-cost upgrade for a hot, west-facing flat. If you’re replacing your windows anyway, the cleaner long-term option is to specify tinted or laminated glass at fabrication — the tint is built into the pane rather than added on top, so there’s nothing to peel or replace later. 9 Power can advise which route suits your flat, orientation and budget.

Questions

ALUMINIUM WINDOW FAQs

Are aluminium windows better than uPVC or timber for Singapore homes?

Aluminium handles Singapore's humidity, heavy rain and coastal salt air without warping, rotting or rusting. The frames are slim, strong and low-maintenance, which is why they are the most common choice for HDB flats, condominiums and landed homes here.
