HDB Window Grilles IN SINGAPORE

A window grille of an HDB flat does two jobs: it keeps children and pets safely away from an open window, and it deters intruders on lower floors. Getting it right means choosing the correct grille for each window and staying within HDB’s design rules.

As an HDB-licensed contractor (Licence HB-12-B), 9 Power fabricates custom aluminium window grilles to your exact opening and to approved designs.

Overview

Which Window Grille HDB Should I Choose?

Not every window needs the same grille. A bedroom window on a high floor has a different job from a living-room window on a lower floor, while a service-yard grille may have different requirements again.

The main choice is between centre-portion, full-height, aluminium, mild-steel and invisible grille designs. The right option depends on how much of the window opens, the level of security you want and how important an unobstructed view is.

Why Choose 9 Power As Your HDB Window Grille Contractor

We are premium aluminium specialists, HDB-licensed (HB-12-B) and BCA-approved, with more than 500 completed projects and a 10-year structural warranty on frame and workmanship. Window Grille Types

Types of Window Grilles in Singapore

Centre-portion grilles: A centre-portion grille covers the openable section of the window while leaving fixed glazed panels unobstructed. It is a practical choice when you want ventilation and protection without putting a grille across the entire window.

Because less material is used, the finished look can also feel lighter.

Full-height grilles: Full-height grilles extend across a larger portion of the window, including openable panels that sit higher up.

They make sense where the whole opening needs protection, particularly for households with young children. The trade-off is that more of the window is covered, so the grille profile and spacing become more noticeable.

Slim-bar aluminium grilles: This is the cleaner, more contemporary option. Slim aluminium bars give you a fixed physical barrier without making the window look heavily fortified.

9 Power fabricates its grilles to the individual window opening rather than working from a standard off-the-shelf size, so the profile, spacing and overall design can be planned around the existing window.

Invisible-frame aluminium grilles: An invisible-frame grille is different from an invisible wire grille. The former is still a solid aluminium grille; its frame and profile are simply designed to minimise the visual bulk around the opening.

It is useful when you want a cleaner sightline without giving up the rigidity of a conventional grille.

Invisible wire grilles: Wire grilles use thin tensioned cables rather than conventional metal bars. Their biggest advantage is visual: from a distance, they have much less impact on the view. But don't confuse low visibility with high security.

Wire systems are primarily attractive where fall prevention and preserving the view are the priorities.

A solid aluminium grille is the more appropriate choice when intrusion resistance is an important part of the brief.

On top of these, 9 Power fabricates invisible-frame aluminium grilles (a slim, near-frameless look that keeps the view), slim-bar grilles, cat-proof fine-mesh grilles, and custom geometric designs. If you want the security of steel, we also make mild-steel window grilles.

HDB Rules

The HDB Rules That Actually Catch People Out

Window grilles are subject to fewer requirements than some types of window replacement, but there are still rules to follow. The exact requirements depend on where the grille is installed, how it is positioned and whether it affects the building facade or an escape route.

In general, homeowners should check five things:

cloud
Design

The grille should comply with the applicable HDB requirements for your block and window.

Height and Position

The grille must stay within the permitted dimensions and should not project beyond the building facade where HDB requirements prohibit this.

Materials

Use materials that meet HDB's requirements for window grilles, such as aluminium, wrought iron or stainless steel where applicable.

3star
External-Facing Grilles

Older blocks may have additional requirements for grilles to be fixed internally, so check the rules that apply to your block rather than assuming an external installation is allowed.

Escape Routes

A grille must not compromise an emergency escape window or make it impossible to exit safely. Where an access panel is required, it should be usable without tools.

These details matter because an installation that looks acceptable from inside the flat can still fall foul of HDB requirements because of its position or effect on the facade. If approval is required, it should be obtained before the work starts. HDB's window-works renovation guidelines set out the requirements that apply to different types of window work.

HDB Approval

Where Approval Is And Isn’t Needed?

Internal grilles behind your windows generally need no prior approval. The exceptions are the external and shared-facing locations, where HDB wants the facade kept uniform and safe:

  • No approval (typically) — internal metal grilles behind bedroom, living and kitchen windows.
  • Approval needed — grilles at service yards, balconies and balcony parapets, and any grille that would face or affect the common corridor.

Because we handle these applications through My HDBPage as part of the job, most homeowners never have to touch the paperwork.

Invisible Grilles vs Solid Aluminium Grilles: How to Decide?

The word invisible makes comparison sound very simple; however, that isn’t the case. What most homeowners do not understand is that:

Invisible does not mean invisible to an intruder.

A thin wire may be difficult to notice when you're looking through the window, but that does not make it equivalent to a solid metal grille for security.

Choose an invisible grille if...

Your biggest concern is keeping the window visually open.

For example, a high-floor living room overlooking greenery may benefit from a grille that virtually disappears into the background. It can also make sense when the primary concern is preventing accidental falls rather than stopping a determined intruder.

Choose aluminium if...

You want a more substantial physical barrier and don't want to compromise on grille rigidity.

A slim aluminium profile does not have to dominate the window. With the right spacing and finish, it can sit quietly within the opening while providing a much more conventional grille structure.

If security is one of your main reasons for installing a grille, tell your contractor that from the beginning. Don't choose a product purely because it looks the least noticeable.

Installation Details

HDB Window Grille Installation: What to Expect

A properly installed grille should be planned around the window, not simply measured as a separate rectangle. Here is what the usual process looks like:

1. Site assessment

The contractor checks the window dimensions, opening configuration, existing frame and the location of the grille. This is also the point to discuss whether you need a conventional security grille, a lighter aluminium profile or an invisible-style solution.

2. Confirm the applicable HDB requirements

Don't assume that every window in an HDB flat is treated identically. The contractor should check the applicable requirements for the window and location and determine whether any approval or submission is required.

HDB's current renovation guidance also directs homeowners to use the appropriate approved contractors for window works.

3. Custom fabrication

Once the dimensions and design are confirmed, the grille is fabricated to fit the opening. This is particularly important for aluminium grilles because a neat installation depends on accurate measurements and properly finished joints.

4. Installation

The finished grille is secured to the window opening according to the agreed design. The installer should also check that the window remains usable and that any relevant access or escape requirements have not been compromised.

5. Final inspection

Before the job is signed off, check the alignment, fixings, finish and operation of the window. A good grille should feel like part of the window rather than an object simply attached to it.

Questions

HDB WINDOW GRILLES FAQs

Do I need HDB approval to install window grilles?

For most flats, installing internal metal grilles behind your windows does not need prior HDB approval. Grilles at service yards, balconies and parapets do require approval, and every grille must follow the HDB-approved designs for your block, which you can review on My HDBPage. Your contractor should handle any approval application on your behalf.
